There are many different ideas out there on how to properly store spices. I’ll go over some of the best, which you can see above. Please note that these aren’t ranked in any specific order. I’ll start off with number one and work my way down.
1. Make Your Own DIY Magnetic Spice Rack
This is a very cool idea because it’s super easy to make, plus it looks good! It doesn’t take up much room either, since you can hang it anywhere. This should only cost around five bucks or less, depending on if you buy your supplies at an actual shop or just use that which you have at home.
2. Use Muffin Tins
This is the most common way I see spices stored. It’s pretty cheap, and it looks good for display if hung on a wall or in a cupboard/cabinet with clear doors. I personally use this method because it keeps my kitchen looking nice but also keeps my spices fresh whenever I need them! Some people may complain that they take up too much room, but unless you go overboard with your collection of spices, then there should be no issue whatsoever! Plus, storing them inside the tins keeps the smells from mixing together, which makes each spice smell good instead of having one bad-smelling cabinet mixed with another! Even if you don’t keep them in tins, though, it’s still fine.
3. Coffee Filters
This is another way I see people storing spices, mainly the ones that they just got for Christmas or their birthday. Using coffee filters can help with keeping your cabinet clean and looking nice, plus they are super cheap! You can buy about 100 of them for only around two dollar. They may not look as nice as putting everything inside of tins (muffin tins), but if you want to save space, then this might be the choice for you! Plus, they come in many pretty colors, making them even more aesthetically pleasing.
4. Mason Jars
This is something I personally love doing, and it’s one of the best ways to store spices. Mason jars look nice and make everything easy to see when you’re looking for a certain spice. This method can get very expensive, though, because mason jars tend to be pretty pricy depending on where you go. Also, since they aren’t air-tight, then your spices will eventually lose their flavor if kept too long! Other than that, this is a great way for people who want an organized and clean way of storing their spices.
5. Magnetic Strips
It may seem like cheating because all you have to do is stick magnets on the back of each jar, but this makes life so much easier, especially if you use mason jars! It’s easy to make since all you need is a magnetic strip, plus it makes everything much easier when trying to find the spice that you want. You can even cut up your old credit card and put one of those magnets on the back for an instant magnet.
6. Tic Tac Containers
One thing I like about tic tac containers is that they are super cheap but also help with keeping your spices organized and clean-looking. Now, this method isn’t very good for people who don’t take their tic tacs out of their container because once you open them up, then your spices will go stale. So if you want to use this method, don’t take your tic tacs out; unless it’s the one you are currently using, then go for it.
7. Making Your Own Custom Spice Rack
If mason jars are too expensive or you just don’t like them, then this might be a good thing for you! This is basically making your own spice rack with things that you have around the house, which makes it very cheap! All you need is about two old books and some paint (optional) to make this work. It does take up more room than other methods, though, so please keep that in mind before trying anything stupid =). If done right, though, this can look really nice and make your cabinet look more aesthetically pleasing.
8. Don’t Forget The Magnetic Strips
As I said in the tic tac section, these are great for making your life easier when looking for spices that you need! Plus, they tend to be pretty cheap, plus since you can cut up old credit cards, then it makes it even cheaper! This is especially true if you have a lot of jars, so being able to stick them on the side makes everything much easier when trying to find what you want.
9. Using Ice Cube Trays For More Than Just Ice Cubes
Ice cube trays are great for storing spices because they are small and easy to carry around wherever you go (so don’t forget about them!). Plus, their small size also makes it easy for you to see what spices you have and what ones you don’t. If done right, then this can be a very cheap method of storing spices; plus, they come in many pretty colors, so why not try them out?
10. Using Muffin Tins To Keep Your Cabinets Clean And Organized
Another way that I see people store their spices is by using muffin tins, mainly because it looks nice and helps with keeping cabinets clean. This method won’t work if the only thing you buy is mason jars, though unless one day your cabinet magically increases in size =). Other than that, this is a good way to store spices, especially if they sell a variety of different sizes to fit your needs.
