5 Things You Didn’t Know About Strawberries

When it comes to fruits (or is it?), strawberries could quite possibly be the most popular one, especially during the summer.  But did you know that there are things that are not widely known about these strawberries?

Here are the top five things you probably don’t know about that red, gorgeous fruit.

Strawberries are not fruits

Strawberries are the only “fruits” that have their seeds on the outside. This phenomenon makes it less of a fruit and more of a pseudo-fruit. An average strawberry has about 200 seeds that are found on the skin rather on the inside like most fruits like apples, pears and apricots. That is why it is not uncommon to have a seed stuck in between the teeth with just one bite.

Strawberries are not berries

Whoa, wait, what? Yes, technically strawberries, despite the name and wide reputation, are not a berry like blueberries or cranberries. This has something to do with the placement of the seeds which are found on the outer surface of the fruit. And to mess your mind some more, some botanists consider each individual seeds as to be a separate fruit.

Strawberries are related to roses

If you want to give someone flowers by a traditionalist and an avant-garde at the same time by giving them strawberries in lieu of roses. You can get the best of both worlds since technically strawberries are related to roses which make it a great flower present and at the same time provide lots of nutrients and vitamins to your loved ones.

Strawberries are packed with vitamin C

Well, this is something not groundbreaking the fact that strawberries taste sour-sweet is a dead giveaway that it is packed with vitamin C. But did you know how many? It is said that eating eight pieces of strawberry has the same vitamin C content of a whole orange. How’s that for vitamin C loading. It is healthy because 100 grams of strawberry only contains about 55 calories which is great news for dieters.

Strawberries can give you a healthy heart

Strawberries are known to be beneficial to the body with all the vitamin C it can give you. But recent studies show that it can help the body prevent or even lower risks of heart disease and certain cancers. It is a great source of vitamin K, folic acid, fiber and can lower blood pressure with its rich amount of potassium and amino acids.

There may be other reasons why people while watching Wimbledon snack on strawberries and cream as 27,000 kilos are consumed each year. But certainly strawberries are both healthy and controversial which makes it a great fruit or flower or whatever.

So the next time you head to the grocery store to pick up a batch, keep these thoughtful tips in mind.  The next time someone calls it a fruit or a berry, you can politely correct them and let them know the truth!
